On June 17, 2007, Dutch-led NATO forces bombed a residential compound in Chora, Afghanistan. At least 11 civilians were killed in three strikes over 50 minutes. Airwars reconstructed the attack using military documents, maps, logbooks, and court filings. The investigation also traces the Afghan family’s fifteen-year legal fight for justice. In 2022, a Dutch court ruled the military could not justify the strike. The case set a rare precedent for civilian reparations under international humanitarian law. We produced the video animations for this piece. We translate the maps and documents from the court into a 3D map which we use to explain the timeline of events.
