On October 13, 2023, seven clearly-marked journalists near the Lebanon-Israel border were struck by two explosions within 37 seconds. Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah was killed; AFP’s Christina Assi was permanently disabled. In collaboration with AFP, Airwars reviewed hours of footage, consulted six munitions experts, interviewed the journalists on scene, and analysed satellite imagery. The investigation identified the first munition as an Israeli-made tank round fired from the east, and found no evidence of military activity near the journalists. The findings were independently corroborated by Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, both of which concluded the strikes were potential war crimes. I built a 3D reconstruction of the strike site and the sequence of events to help establish where the munitions were fired from.
