Omar Pereira da Silva was one of 27 residents killed during the 2021 Jacarezinho Massacre, the deadliest police operation in Rio de Janeiro's history. As one of the first cases taken up by the Mirante Project — a partnership between Rio's Public Defenders' Office and the Fluminense Federal University's Study Group on New Illegalities (GENI/UFF) to independently investigate police violence in favelas — experts produced a technical assessment finding that Omar was fatally shot in the chest at close range by a CORE (Special Resources Coordination) officer. I was commissioned by researcher Flavia Palladino to produce the forensic 3D reconstruction of the case, used alongside the technical report to challenge the official account of his death.
