Ibrahima Barry arrived in Germany from Guinea in 2016. For eight years his asylum claims and work permit requests were repeatedly denied, and he was moved between numerous refugee accommodations, eventually landing at Flüchtlingsdorf Saarn in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The precarity took a toll on his mental health, leading to repeated hospitalizations — the last just days before his death. On the night of January 6, 2024, police responded to a disturbance in his room; bodycam footage shows officers tasering him twice, then restraining him face-down with his arms and legs bound, applying prolonged force to his back, shoulders, and legs while no one checked his vital signs. He died minutes later. Commissioned by his family's lawyers, Forensis examined the bodycam footage and case documents to reconstruct the incident in precise detail, working with forensic medicine expert Dr. Michael Freeman to establish how the restraint caused his death — directly contradicting the reduced charges the nine officers now face. I was part of the research team, responsible for the 3D reconstruction and photomatching used to build the reconstruction.
